Gait Analysis: The Serious Runners Salvation
Too often, runners associate injury as something inevitable with serious training. However, many Sports professionals realize that the problem is how we run. For example too many runners land with their feet too far in front or at an awkward angle. As the New York Times notes in a recent article, Gait analysis in a specialized clinic can identify form problems or bad habits that lead to injury. It usually starts with an evaluation of strength and flexibility that includes some manipulation on an examination table and a series of exercises including a running session on a treadmill in front of a video camera follows.
These examinations take place at a handful of hospitals and sports performance centers, and typically last one to two hours, including an initial review of what the medical professionals see. Patients usually get a written evaluation detailing how they might run pain-free. As a bonus, the lessons learned can also result in faster, more efficient running. There is such a facility in our area, the Speed Clinic at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville
