{ 2013 Women's Training Program {
Mondays, April 29 - June 17 (8 sessions), 6:30 - 8:00 p.m.
This eight-session program is for women who want to begin a new exercise program or get back into exercising. Following a program that respects individual needs and fitness levels, participants are guided in activities that promote flexibility, strength, and conditioning. Participants learn and practice sensible exercise techniques that they continue between training sessions. The program promotes fitness in a non-competitive atmosphere of mutual support and encouragement.
Participants walk, jog, or run with others moving at similar pace. Participants choose between four different groups: walkers, walk/runners, beginning runners, and advance beginner runners. Each group is guided by volunteer coaches who vary their workouts throughout the program. Participants are encouraged to move between the groups, as they are comfortable. For all groups, always keep a coach in sight for safety and liability reasons. To help you decide which group to start with, see the brief descriptions here:
Walkers—this group seems to naturally flow in three paces: fast, medium, and scenic. If you enjoy walking and cannot or do not want to run - this is the group for you!
Walk/Runners—if you’ve been walking and want to pick up the pace and/or build your endurance, you can choose from three groups:
a. Fast (about a 13 minute mile)
b. Moderate (around a 14 minute mile)
c. Scenic (about 15 minute mile)
These groups start out with a walk/run ratio that is more walk than run, and over the course of the program will end up running more than walking. The intervals vary among the groups, so check in with one of the enthusiastic group leads. You are welcome to move among the groups as you feel is best for you!
Beginning Runners—So you’ve been practicing the walk/run method and feel it’s time to bump it up some? This group is right for you if you find running continuously without walk breaks to be challenging or if you run at an 11:30 pace or slower. The amazing coaches in this group will help you gradually increase your mileage and endurance.
Advanced Beginning Runners—Ladies in this group pace anywhere from an 11:30 to 11:00 minute mile, have done a 5K and can run at a sustained pace for 3 miles while engaging in conversation. The wonderful coaches here will guide a quick progression in pace and distance. Note: If you run faster, then please plan to commit to staying with the group for safety and liability reasons. You might want to consider signing up for Reston Runners Interval Training Program at South Lakes High School starting in June.
In addition to exercise, each session includes a guest speaker on topics such as proper walking and running form, stretching, nutrition, motivation, and how to select shoes and apparel.
Participants prepare themselves to complete the 5K (3.1-mile) Women's Distance Festival event (soon to be announced) on June 22, 2013.
Every Monday (April 29 through June 17), 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. at South Lakes High School, Reston, VA.
This program is open to all women, 16 years and older, who want to exercise in a supportive atmosphere, and who have read and checked agreement of the program waiver of responsibility during on-line registration acknowledging full understanding of potential program risks.
$30 per person by mail or online at www.restonrunners.org. The fee covers administrative costs and the cost of a program exercise shirt for each participant.
