The first weekend of September brought us some awesome running weather, finally a nice break from the heat and humidity of the summer. This Labor Day weekend also presented the Reston Runners with many opportunities to get out and enjoy the cooler temps and clear blue skies. Of course we had the ever-consistent Saturday and Sunday running and walking options, from the 3 and 6 mile walking options to 5, 10 or 20 mile runs. I suspect many of us now really take these events for granted, but when you stop and give it a little thought you realize just how awesome it is to have a group of friends to meet, every Saturday and Sunday, rain or shine, heat and humidity of summer or driving snow of the dead of winter. You KNOW someone is going to be out there. There will be fluids at the start and finish, and if it is a Sunday at least one other point on the route. It is very likely now that the course will even be marked for you. So, if you haven’t done so recently, I recommend you thank a board member and some of the many volunteers that work to make everything run so smoothly. Every day volunteers are working to keep the Club going strong. From drafting and coordinating schedules, updating the website, paying bills, drafting budgets, planning races or programs, coordinating Gung dins, hauling water and Gatorade around early in the morning and picking it up hours later, answering countless emails from members, potential future members, and others from within the community or in some cases all parts of the country with random questions. While most of us can jump out of bed, throw on our running shoes and show up, the consistency of the Saturday and Sunday events just doesn’t happen. Volunteer members MADE it happen.
While these consistent weekend events are great opportunities to get in some good exercise, locally, without traveling or investing a lot of time, the Club (and splinter groups) also provides us with other options. For example, for this Saturday morning Anna B and Todd W coordinated the annual Appalachian Trail JFK 50 check out run. This provides runners training for the JFK 50-miler in November an opportunity to run the AT section of course. This is really a great idea for those first timers who have heard about the rocks and switchbacks, but can’t really appreciate (yet) what fun they are going to have in November.
