Irish Eyes Are Smiling: Last Weekend of Irish American Heritage Month

Saturday

Ah top o’ the morning to all who showed up at Buzz Aldrin Elementary School off of Center Harbor Road for the Saturday run. Looks like plenty of runners and walkers were looking forward to getting their blood flowing since the day was crisp.  We Reston Runners must keep moving even though the Stats and Chats writer was held up changing her sneakers in the car after running through every green light from South to North Reston to get to the start on time.  I apologize to the newbie’s for not getting your names for this issue of Stats and Chats (ex-President Joe F. mentioned to me that he had the names but he was just pulling my leg!). I want to take this opportunity to send all of you a Hundred Thousand Welcomes -- Cead Mile Failte (Irish translation)  to all of you!  I hope you come back to join us on our regular Reston Runners scheduled runs and walks! While walking with Cliff we chatted about a variety of things but mostly about the beautiful Irish Countryside, our Irish roots, politics, and many neighborhoods that the mailman has to deliver mail to (Cliff was a mailman in his other life, lol!). Nancy joined us and the conversation veered off to dogs.  Nancyowns a nice mountain cottage that she rents out to dog lovers.  I learned that Donna R. finished the National Marathon with seconds to spare as she qualified for the Boston Marathon.  I believe Tim C. ran the National Marathon because he mentioned that he could not attend a special event being held in Richmond the eve of the race. Tim C.is a fast runner so I assume he not only qualified for Boston, New York, San Francisco, etc.,  he may even start training with the astronauts to find out if there really is 100-year flooding on the moon.

Moshe F. spotted me with my note pad and told me that I should ask John N.  why he started running again.  I said WHAT!  No way John N. the speed walker is running?!  There has to be a story behind that one -- well there is and you all will have to ask him because I am not divulging the answer to that question here lol!   Moshe also mentioned that he and his wife Ruthare expecting the birth of their fourth grandchild soon. Congrats to the two of you!  Lindsey and Gary brought their beautiful baby by to say hello. She was so cute in her pink snuggly outfit; she will be running with us before you know it! Jill T.  was running strong and she will be getting her runs in on the North end of town now that she will be a North Reston resident. Welcome Back Jill! I hear Mike F.  is going to be running the hilly Richmond Marathon. I had to ask Jim N.  if he was related to the  Reston-based Chiropractor Douglas Nagel who supposedly supplied illegal drugs to a certain sports team.   Jim's answer  is NO to that question! I went to Cosi to join the resting Reston Runners for more chats. While in line to purchase breakfast I bumped into a tall drink of water named Joanna C. and noticed that she had an Irish brough.  She really is from that amazing land called Ireland.  In line next to her was a fairly new runner named James.  Looking forward to seeing both on future runs! Jenny T. was in fine artistic form signing lovely lyrical songs that she maked up for her kindergarten students and even made up a new nickname for Jordan (it’s kind of similar to my former coworker KDog's name).

Sunday

March 28th. About 80 runners/walkers showed up for this morning run. Amazingly I got there on time for the announcements and no newbies showed up Tim C. mentioned that Youth in Motion filled up within 9 hours -- 360 children are signed up for the yearly program. There was mention of sign-up deadlines in April for the Marine Corp marathon and the Army 10 Miler.  Moshe mentioned Thank Yous to all the important people who helped with water support: Jenny T., Brian K., Tony C., Ellen, and Virginia (hope I didn’t miss anybody).  It looks like Brian even supplies snacks --way to go BK! Kevin and Jim B. ran an indoor Tri in Tysons Corner that sounded like an interesting event.  I hear that Gary A. was out and about swinging around his strong arm -- way to go Gary!  Brian K was snapping away with his super-duper camera -- please delete those photos of me Brian.   PLEASE!   (BK insert: me thinks thou protest too much Bridget: here's the link to Sunday's Pics.  Lisa was looking for Lukesince she had his sweatshirt that he forgot at Fall Into Winter Race. After her run she mentioned that she got a text message from him while she was running on today’s trail.  Cliff and I were walking together again when lo and behold who do we see in the neighborhood? A man and his dogs.  This familiar looking man has been MIA from Reston Runners probably as long as I have been. I told Tim S. that I am going to write about him and congratulated him on the sale of his home on Navy Drive !  (Tim reminded me that today is Palm Sunday and that he was on his way to church to say his prayers -- oops!)
