Come on out this Saturday and join the Best Feet Forward group for new or "scenic" runners. Plan to arrive by 7:50 a.m. so the group can coordinate miles, intervals, and pacing. There is a non-profit group organizing a trail clean-up campaign on trails in the Potomac river watershed on April 14. This is a good opportunity to clean parts of the CCT. The website is www.potomaccleanup.org.
UPCOMING RACES
The South Lakes Band Boosters is hosting The Spirit of Reston 5K on Saturday, April 14 at 9:00 a.m. which will start and finish at South Lakes HS. The course is full of surprises! Last year’s comments: “The best race ever!” “Thank you so much! I really enjoyed the effort the band put into this race.” “Perfect!” Prizes will be given at the end of the race, donated by community businesses! The race will be timed using Chronotrack timing system. On-line registration at: www.southlakesband.org or www.dcroadrunners.org.
Wolf Trap’s Run for the Arts 5K will be held on Saturday, April 14 at 8:45 a.m. Enjoy this scenic and challenging course as you race through the hills of Wolf Trap, the nation’s only National Park for the Performing Arts, jaunt up Trap Road, around Shouse Village neighborhood, and return to Wolf Trap to finish through the shaded woods. The Junior League of Northern Virginia is hosting the 7th Annual Strides for Success 5K Race and 1K Family Fun Run/Walk will take place on Sunday, April 15 at 8:30 a.m. All proceeds benefit the JLNV’s mission, including community programs such as Kids in the Kitchen, an anti-obesity program that will be on-site promoting healthy eating habits and fitness. Come on out for the 9th Annual Nature House 5K Fund Run on Saturday, April 21 at 8:00 a.m. Enjoy the new and amazing Nature House facility—the place for environmental education in and around Reston! The race is on rolling, scenic and mostly wooded course through Reston neighborhoods and parkland with timing provided by Reston Runners. After finishing the event, you can explore the nature center and Nature House, which will be open after the event. It is LEED Gold Certified by the U.S. Green Building Council as a model of sustainable design and construction. It is Reston's home for environmental and nature education opportunities for all ages.
The Star Kid 8K Race and Family Fun Run/Walk benefits the pediatric heart program at Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children. Come on out on Sunday, April 22 at 8:00 a.m. at George Mason University. Info and registration is here.
Clearview Elementary School in Herndon is raising money to support their Heart Rate Monitor Fund by holding the 2nd annual 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run on Saturday, May 5 at 8:00 a.m. Last year’s race raised enough for the PE department to purchase 12 monitors! Run for Justice 5K and Kids’ Fun Run to benefit the Fairfax Law Foundation. Sunday, May 6, 2012, with an 8:00 a.m. start time. We have a new course and venue: Tysons II-Galleria Lower Level. The 5K race fees are: $25 Early Registration; $30 after April 22, and $35 on May 1, race day. The Kids’ Fun Run is $10. The 2nd Annual Loudoun Lyme 5K on Sunday, May 6, at 8:00 a.m. benefits The National Capital Lyme and Tick-Borne Disease Association. This event drives awareness and raises money to help find a cure for Lyme disease - the number one tick-borne illness in the United States. Race day also features a 1M family walk, children's activities, and an information fair to educate the public about Lyme disease, its causes, symptoms, and treatments. Click here for more info.
Mark your calendar for Sadie’s Race a 5k and Kid’s Fun Run. Saturday, May 12, 2012, Purcellville Train Station, 200 N 21st Street Purcellville. An easy and fast 5k course race in beautiful Purcellville for a great cause! Prior to the race, we will have a kids fun run, plus many activities for the whole family. 100% of proceeds will go to SmileTrain. For more information go to www.sadiesmilefoundation.org.
5K Walk for Youth Mental Wellness on Saturday, May 19 at 9:30 a.m. at Lake Accotink Park, McLaren-Sargent Pavilion in Springfield. Proceeds benefit Fairfax Partnership for Youth and Josh Anderson Foundation efforts in youth mental wellness education, suicide prevention, and bullying prevention, and the Befriend-A-Child Youth Mentoring Program of the Fairfax County Government. Footprints for Hope 5K Run and 3-Mile/1-Mile Walk takes place on Saturday, May 19 at 8:00 a.m.at Connections for Hope in Herndon. There will be a Family Fun–Health & Wellness Expo with Hula Hoop contest, kids’ activities, delicious food, zumba, games, and entertainment! Proceeds will benefit six organizations: Vecinos Unidos, Reston Interfaith, Literacy Council of Northern Virginia, Just Neighbors, Jeanie Schmidt Free Clinic, and C4H. To register, please click here.
The 3rd annual Alexandria Running Festival Half Marathon and 5K happens on Sunday, May 27 at 7:30 a.m. Start and finish near Eisenhower Avenue Metro Station in Alexandria.
